This guidance office is concerned with the total development of each student
as a unique and worthwhile human being. It is the responsibility of the
guidance counselor to help students achieve their fullest potential in all
areas of their lives; intellectually, psychologically, physically, and
spiritually.
COUNSELING SERVICES
Academic Counseling:
Academic Counseling involves a cooperative effort between parents, students,
and the school. Its purpose is to assist the students in choosing classes
which will challenge their abilities and help them achieve their highest
potential. Considerations include career interests, college requirements and
individual abilities.
College/Career
Guidance: College and career guidance strives to assist students in
making informed choices based on career interests and individual aptitudes
and abilities. Main considerations in college and vocational school
selection include: cost, size and location, availability of financial aid,
and specific course offerings. A reference library is maintained with
up-to-date information on colleges and career opportunities.
Personal Counseling:
The scope of personal counseling encompasses all areas of the student's
life. Problems with family, friends, teachers, and course work are main
concerns. The role of personal counseling is of vital importance to the
total well-being and development of each student. It is impossible for
students with serious personal concerns to achieve their full potential
either academically or personally. Close contacts with outside agencies are
maintained to assist those in need of receiving in-depth or specialized
services.
TESTING SERVICES
The testing program is designed to assist
in placement and scheduling, identify aptitudes and abilities as well as
deficit areas, provide diagnostic data, and prepare students for college
entrance exams. The Nouvel testing program includes:
EXPLORE - Academic &
Career Exploration Inventory (9th Grade)
PLAN - Preliminary ACT
(10th Grade)
PSAT - Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test (11th Grade)
These tests are
administered at Nouvel on National Test Day (in mid October)
College Entrance Exams
ACT Assessment
(Spring of 11th Grade)
SAT (Scholastic
Aptitude Test) (Spring of 11th Grade)
These tests are
administered at designated testing centers in the Saginaw area. Students may
"retest" on both exams in an effort to improve their scores.
MME TESTING - Scores
from these exams are used to qualify for the State of Michigan Merit Award
monies (11th and 12th grades). These tests are administered at Nouvel during
the fall (12th grade) and in the spring (11th Grade). This is the old
MEAP exam. The new version includes the ACT, WorkKeys and the State of
Michigan writing, mathematics and science tests. There will e
additional information coming home as we get closer to the test cycle.
REGISTRATION
AND SCHEDULING
The counselors are responsible for the
registration and scheduling of students. They meet with students and parents
(during 8th grade) and by appointment with the parents of 9-11th graders to
complete the necessary forms and make course selections based upon abilities
and interests. It is the counselors' duty to provide prospective students
with detailed information about the school's course offerings,
organizations. Every effort is made to insure that each student's schedule
meets his individual needs as fully as possible.
