A MESSAGE FROM THE NOUVEL CATHOLIC CENTRAL PRINCIPAL:

Good people of Nouvel and those about to join the Nouvel family,

Like life and the society in which we live, change is necessary for survival.  Similarly, change in our curricular offerings incorporates necessary “tweaking” of various disciplines and the learning that results – not the standards that have hallmarked Nouvel for twenty three years.

We will be departing from inefficient learning practices (such as 45 minute class periods and generic subjects) in favor of intertwined academic disciplines.  Society (global and local) demands that our students be prepared to accommodate rapid change.  Therefore, the manner by which we teach and the utilization of new knowledge will be framed in a demonstration of academic prowess.  Beyond proficiency, Nouvel will intentionally pursue mastery of academic topics that exceeds state standards in route to the student’s potential.

In real time, how does the end state of learning look?  Visualize students simultaneously using Language Arts, Theology, and Physics (for example) to accomplish a multi-disciplinary demonstration project.  Previously, each subject would have been taken individually with no crossover.  By centering our efforts on profound learning versus test preparation, students generate motivation, become engaged, and hopefully reach a state of what is called “flow” in the educational research.  The best way to describe flow is by inviting you to reminisce about being in love as a teenager.  When “in love,” creativity is peeked.  Attitudes are optimistic…almost euphoric.  Energy levels are maximized.  Flow, as leveraged engagement in learning, is both tenacious and quality oriented.  “Teachable moments” become extended as the depth and breadth of new knowledge are expanded rigorously and relevantly.

We are excited about the profound learning that is Nouvel’s current hallmark and ongoing destiny.

All the best

Paul D. Fallon

Principal

Schedules will be mailed in mid-August.  Change should be requested for mistakes only; no teacher or lunch hour changes please!

FRESHMAN ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Nouvel Catholic Central High School.  You have entered what should be one of the most exciting times of your life. You are also starting an educational journey that will be the basis for much of what happens in your life after high school.

Our academic expectations are very high (nothing lower than a C- is passing).  If you have not achieved as you had hoped to, it is time to dedicate yourself to this school year.   Academic success at Nouvel is about reading, writing and staying on top of the requirements. Success in high school and college is based on your ability to read.  Comprehension is another issue all together. As you may have learned last year, it is vitally important that you keep up on a daily basis.  Keeping up AND catching up is very difficult.

When you and/or your parents need assistance to work you through high school feel free to contact your counselor.  Mr. Doane for students A - K; Mrs. Maples for student L - Z.

The freshmen will take the ACT EXPLORE test, on October 15 during the morning hours. This test has a great deal to do with career choices and the skills to enter and be a success in their choice.  When the scores are returned we will explain them to your student.

SOPHOMORE ANNOUNCEMENTS

This fall you began the final steps in preparing for post high school plans.   The sophomore year is a like being in "no man's land".  You are no longer freshmen and yet you are not an upper classman.  This year will be extremely important to your high school record.  If last year did not meet your expectations it is time to do something about that. We will help you with your plans.

Success in high school and college is based on your ability to read.  Comprehension is another issue all together. As you may have learned last year, it is vitally important that you keep up on a daily basis.  Keeping up AND catching up is very difficult!

The sophomores will take the ACT PLAN test, on National Test day-October 15 during the morning school hours. This test that has a great deal to do with what you have learned through the first two years of high school.  The PLAN will also give an ACT predictor score. When considered with their EXPLORE scores from last year, we should get a fairly good handle on their career ideas and their course choices for the coming year.

When you and/or your parents need assistance to work your through the next few years feel free to contact your counselor.

JUNIOR ANNOUNCEMENTS

The junior year is a year of testing and preparing seriously for life after high school.  You effort during this year has a great deal to do with your admission to the college of your choice. Your GPA will take into consideration what you earned during the first two years of high school.  College admission people however tend to look more closely at the junior and senior years; the courses you took and your accomplishments in those courses.

During National Test Day, October 15, you will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT.  The PSAT portion of the test measures your ability to do higher level thinking (the kind you will be required to do at the college level).  The NMSQT is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying portion of the test.  You will be competing to get into the top 1% of test takers to qualify for scholarship funds.

In March you will be taking the ACT, the WorkKeys and the Michigan Merit Exam.  The ACT is the key test requirement for admission to any four year college in Michigan when you are coming directly out of high school.  The WorkKeys is used by businesses in Michigan as part of the application process.  The Michigan Merit is used to determine when you get the Michigan Promise scholarship funds.

SENIOR ANNOUNCEMENTS

Well, you only have one year to go to finally earn your diploma.  It is vitally important that you continue working until graduation to complete what you have started.  Don't put college admission in jeopardy by having a poor senior year academically.

It is important for you to keep track of deadlines that must be met as a senior. These will include college applications and scholarship applications.  Please don't depend on others to do this for you!

The counseling department will be hosting a night of information for you and your parents on September 24 at 7:00pm in the Cafeteria.  We will also host a financial aid night in early January, 2009.

When questions arise as how to proceed in senior activities please get in touch with us in the Counseling Department.

It is time to get your applications into the Counseling Center to start your planning for the fall of 2009. While you are at it, make a list of your honors and activities, both in school and out, so you can include them with your applications.  Begin thinking about scholarships which will reach their peak early next year. Prepare a one page paper addressing who you are, what you have accomplished to date and what you hope to do with your life.  Almost all scholarships will require this paper.

May God bless you in all your endeavors.
