The team closed their season by wrestling their best match at team districts the younger wrestlers showed great improvement and brought optimism for the future.

Congratulations to Tim Ryan, Gabe Reyes & Sean White for being selected as Division 3 All-State First Team

2004/2005

WOW.  What a season!  After getting off to a 2-6 start no one expected this kind of ending.  The Nouvel Varsity Baseball team regrouped, re-focused and the Seniors took over.  The team went on to a 9 game unbeaten streak in which continued over into the State Tournament.

The Districts were at Swan Valley.  After getting outstanding pitching and some timely hitting the Panthers beat Carrollton 7-2.  Next up in the finals was Swan Valley.  The Vikings had been ranked in the top 10 in the state all season.  This game turned out to be a total slug-fest.  Nouvel held on to win 16-15.

Nouvel had the luxury of going home for the Regional’s.  Nouvel again got strong pitching and hitting and had little trouble beating Durand and Birch Run, 13-3 and 9-1 respectively.  It was obvious Nouvel was prepared for both teams thanks to the excellent scouting report from Wayne Westendorf.

Next up was the Quarterfinals at Essexville Garber against Armada.  Again Nouvel was well prepared due to the scouting report from Scott Tesluck.  This game turned out to be a pitching dual.  And thanks to an outstanding defensive play by the Nouvel shortstop the game remained tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 7th.  Nouvel then played the game the way it was meant to be played.  A walk, bunt and a game winning double over the head of the right fielder and Nouvel won 2-1.  This game was a good example of how bad this team wanted to win.  Nouvel’s starting pitcher went 5 strong innings.  This coming just after having his nose shattered in pieces a week prior in practice.  Thanks to the dedication and hard work of athletic trainer Tasha Mulder he was ready to play.

The Nouvel baseball team was on its way to Battle Creek.  First up in the semis was Leroy Pine River.   Nouvel played another all around outstanding game.  Nouvel took an early lead and held on to a 5-1 win.  Nouvel got all the spark they needed in the 4th inning.  A Pine River player hit a liner down the right field line.  Nouvel’s right fielder coasted over and the threw a strike to the shortstop cutting down the runner trying to stretch to a double.

Standing in the way of a Division III State Championship was Homer.  Homer was the defending Division III State Champs and was also riding a nation record 75 wins in a row.   The odds of winning were totally stacked against Saginaw Nouvel.   It was obvious once this team got to Battle Creek they were on a mission.   Nouvel had probably just taken their best pre-game batting practice of the year.  Kids, and I mean everyone, were hitting balls everywhere including over the fence.  Once this team arrived at the stadium it was all business.  Things didn’t start out the way we wanted them to.  After three errors and 5 runs Nouvel was down 5-0 going into the bottom of the 4th.  After coming off the field in the 4th the team gathered in front of the dugout and took a knee.  Coach reminded everyone that they all had a job.  Not any one person can win this game.  It is going to take everyone to focus on the task at hand and get it done.   Nouvel led off the bottom of the 4th with a triple then the flood gates opened.  After one out, Nouvel got 4 consecutive hits a fielders choice another hit and a walk and now the score was 5-5.  Nouvel had chased Homers All-State pitcher from the mound and Homer brought in another All-State pitcher.  This pitcher was greated by a two run single and now it was 7-5 Nouvel.  The game remained this way till the top of the 7th.  After getting the lead-off guy out Homer responded with two hits in a row.  Nouvel then changed pitchers and got the next guy on a sac fly making it 7-6 Nouvel with a guy on third.  Homer had their best hitter at the plate.  Nouvel’s coaches were scrambling to decide whether to pitch or walk the batter.   Then Nouvel’s head coached remember the saying of his third baseman, “to be the best you have to beat the best”, Nouvel pitched to the hitter and got a ground out to second to end the game.

                                   DIVISION III STATE CHAMPS 30-13.

Finally all those ground balls hit by coach Tim Ryan, fly balls by coach Steve Savage, many hours spent on pitching by coaches Dave Horny and Ramiro Torres JR, base running drills by Coach Andy Richards, and preparation of the freshman and sophomores by Ramiro Torres SR paid off.

What an experience!  These kids just accomplished something that many kids never even get close to and no one can take it away.

The Nouvel Baseball program would like to thank all of the people that support us and back us through good and bad.  It was nice to see all the people that followed us all the way.   And a special thanks to the families of the players for sticking it out through all those times and believing.

Pom Pon

2005/2006

The winter season is the big season for these ladies as they provide with numerous scintillating performances at halftime of the basketball games. Not only do they showcase their talents in our gym, they also enter into their competitive season. This year Seniors Melanie Coughlin ’06, Holy Spirit Parish and Jessica Sweeney ’06, St. Peter & Paul Parish, led the team in Regional competition as well as at the Spirit Shine Celebration. Although the ladies did not advance from Regional Competition, they rebounded with a strong performance at the Spirit Shine Celebration with a 2nd place finish.

2004/05

The pom pon squad washed senior citizens cars for free at Independence Village Retirement Community in Frankenmuth and in return Independence Village donated $350 to the pom pon program.

2003/04

The girls had an opportunity to show how much their hard work and enthusiasm meant at the regional competition and they did not disappoint. The ladies performance was rock solid and garnered them a finish worth reaching the state finals. At the finals, the girls again put on a great performance and finished as the 10th team in the state. In addition, they provided us with excellent performances throughout the winter season. Captains, Ashley Dombrowski '04, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, and Kaitlin Herzog '04, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, provide the squad with outstanding leadership all year. Congratulations ladies!

Hockey

2005/2006

Sometimes you set out to schedule a tougher group of teams for the regular season in the hopes that the team will rise to the level of competition. It is impressive when a team actually accomplishes that goal and our hockey team is a perfect example. They were presented with game after game of top competition and the boys adjusted by picking up their play. Led by Seniors Tony Vlassis ‘06, Scott Butterfield ’06, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, and Jason Sulen ’06, Holy Spirit Parish. The team was in every game while winning their share.
