DESCRIPTION

Art Emphasis is an advanced two semester course for the serious student who demonstrates exceptional interest and ability in Art.  Students will pursue a study in the latest art trends and their artists.  Students will be given an opportunity to do advanced work in drawing, painting, graphic and applied arts.  New art media and techniques will be explored as well as an emphasis on art history.  Careers in art will be discussed and literature available.  Students will participate in art competitions, art shows, and school  and community projects.

 GOALS

  • To give students the opportunity to increase their proficiency in terminology and techniques related to areas of art study.

To strengthen perceptual awareness and cognitive skills through sensory experiences.  To expand their skills in producing visual art in a wide variety of media and techniques as well as their ability to communicate feelings and ideas.  To develop skills to analyze, compare, interpret, and evaluate art of self, other students, and major artists.  To recognize, distinguish, and appreciate art and cultural influences of differing cultures and historical periods.

REQUIREMENTS AND RULES OF THE CLASS

  1. Make good use of class time.  You are expected to work on only your Art assignments everyday in class.  This is very important.  During a 5 day school week, we have only 3 hours and 45 minutes of work time, plus a 5 minute set-up/clean-up each day.  Talking during the entire class period is not making good use of your time.  Remember:  Good Art takes time.  Good thinking takes time, and a lot of talking is a waste of time.

  2. Bring the required materials to class as instructed in each class period.

  3. There will be NO EATING OR DRINKING in the classroom.

  4. Be courteous to classmates and staff members.  Respect yourself and others.

  5. Participate in classroom discussions and critiques.

  6. Present each assignment on time.  Each assignment is due at the beginning of its due date class period.

  7. Keep the classroom clean at all times.  Clean up after yourself.

  8. Read and follow the POLICIES REGARDING STUDENT CONDUCT in the Student handbook.

  9. Comply with the Nouvel Catholic Central Dress Code.

  10. ATTENDANCE:  Attendance at each class is essential in order for you to complete assignments and meet all the class requirements.  Please read and follow the policies regarding ATTENDANCE in the Student Handbook.

  11. BE ON TIME FOR CLASS! Please read the TARDINESS policy in the Student Handbook.

 CONFERENCE HOURS

If you need to meet with me for any reason I will be available before class each morning from 7:30-7:50a.m and after school from 2:36-3:00p.m.

 GRADING PROCEDURES

Grades will be determined on work evaluated on achievement in the following areas:  Studio production, weekly sketchbook activities, exams, quizzes and critiques.  Late work will receive a reduction in points equivalent to one letter grade provided you hand it in within one week of the due date.  Work handed in after one week will receive a failing grade (59 pts.). Work not handed in will receive 0 points.  The grading scale to be used for this class is printed in the Student Handbook.  Since we all do not possess natural talent and ability, your effort as well as ability will be taken into consideration.
