Choir Handbook

The purpose of this handbook is to define what is expected of you, so every student knows what to work toward:

Most importantly show respect to the director and to each other.

It is expected that you will handle musical demands responsibly.

You will learn the joy that comes from pride in excellent performances, and the reputation that goes along with it. This includes athletic events, concerts, school liturgies, and all other performance venues.

Do your best at all times!!

Meeting these expectations should not be difficult since we all have the skills to meet these goals. You must remain quiet, listen in class, sing to your best ability, and show that you care. Excessive talking will destroy any choir; don’t be that person who causes disruptions!

Check schedules, mark your calendars, and be a part of events in our music program. When conflicts arise, communicate these to the director well in advance of the date in question. Working or family vacation is not an acceptable reason to miss choir (see absence policy below).

Code of Conduct

All school rules and expectations are to be considered in effect during all organization activities (both during and outside of the regular school day). You are expected to cooperate with the director (or his volunteer member) and follow their lead. You are expected to abstain from offenses including illegal drugs, alcohol, smoking, destruction of school property, harassment of fellow students, insubordinate behavior, use of offensive language, etc. After the appropriate due process if you are involved in an offense, the penalties outlined in the Nouvel Student Handbook will be followed as determined by the director and school administrators.

Performance Absence Policy

Criteria for excused absence from a performance:

Death in your immediate family

Personal illness (with doctor’s or parental excuse)

* Expecting phone call from parent before or the day of the event and a letter received the following day. (If phone call and letter is not received from the parent to me, the student will lose the concert performance points.)

- Extenuating circumstances (see explanation)

An extenuating circumstance involves situations such as conflicts with other school activities which are not described above. For example, a conflict with an athletic event or other school function which will be handled by the teachers, coaches, and administration involved. Conflicts with student’s jobs or family vacations do not qualify as an excuse. You know the three after school commitments adjust your schedule and inform your parents accordingly. If the student has an excusable absence for a performance the director must be notified two weeks prior to the event with parent letter or the student will be considered unexcused.

Participation in Non-School Music Organizations

Students are encouraged to supplement their training with experiences through community and church music organizations; however, when a scheduled conflict occurs, the Nouvel music program will take precedence over any of these other musical opportunities. In addition, these musical opportunities will not qualify for an excused absence.

Nouvel High School Choir Grading Policy

This years Choir Class is going to be graded and evaluated. The choir grade will be based largely on daily class participation, punctuality, and cooperation. As well, attendance and punctuality to in school and after school performance requirements will weigh heavily on your semester grade.

Your marking period and semester grade will be determined by the following criteria:

1. Daily Participation Point= 10 points per day (Approximately 50 days each marking period, total of 100 days for the semester)

Ways to lose daily participation points: Classroom Rules

1. Talking or inappropriate behavior after class has started or before class is dismissed, especially once the piano begins and you are instructed to sing. (Please raise your hand if you have any questions.)

2. Unexcused tardiness, you must be in your seat when the bell rings with materials prepared.

3. Will not cooperate or sing during class, mass, or performance venue.

* If you are sick and are still attending class and you do not feel well enough to sing, a note from your parent to me must be brought in to excuse you from that day’s activities.

4. Skipping any in-school event (mass, pep-rally, or in school performance) may result in loss of more then 10 points for this occurrence.

5. Not bringing required materials (pencil and choir folder)

6. Bringing any food, gum, candy, or drink in the classroom. (Only bottled water allowed)

7. Leaving the room or ensemble without permission. (Please raise your hand if you have a need to leave the room or have any questions.)

* I am also asking that students stay out of the practice-equipment rooms and my office without permission. After class is dismissed you are to stay in the classroom unless permission is granted.

8. Other instances of non-participation or misbehavior depending on circumstance.

Daily Participation Point Total= 1,000 Points

2. After School Performance Point= 500 points per after school performance

*There will be a sign-in and visual account of each member by the director prior to the performance.

  1. December 19th Christmas Concert=500 points

Performance Point Total= 1,000 Points

If there are multiple incidents of a student lacking in this class or you are significantly falling behind you can expect a phone call home from me to your parents.

In Conclusion

This Choir relies on all of us to do our part, and to carry our own weight. While each of us has different levels of skill and experience, we can learn from one another, and work together to maintain and exceed the levels of success that we are enjoying.

It is not my intent to make this class difficult, but I believe that it is worthy of your best effort each day. This is your Choir and I hope that each of you will take personal pride and ownership in our excellence! This class will be very exciting, enjoyable, and FUN!! However, the joy is in the process of doing (not in finishing), and the reward is in the journey that we will take together, not in the destination. Our dream for the music program is unfolding every day, and for me to see your growth is truly amazing. Be sure that your contribution to this Choir is a positive one. Our success and development depends on it!
