Honors French III

Grades 11, 12

Course Description:

Emphasis is placed on speaking and writing French.  Students read and converse in French about short stories as well as everyday topics.  Grammar is constantly reviewed and more complex forms are learned.  Students are required to give presentations in French. 

 

Prerequisite:  “B” average in French II.

 

I.                    The following outlines the course objectives for the year.

A.     Classes will be conducted in French as often as possible. By the end of the year, the students should understand most of the French used in class.

B.     With the use of a dictionary, the students will be able to write short themes in French.

C.     Students will cover the following materials: review present and past tenses, review preterite vs. the imperfect, learn future, conditional, and present subjunctive. The class will cover object pronouns in greater depth and learn relative pronouns.

D.     Students will study the history of France from the early legends to the twentieth century.

E.      Students are expected to take an active part in class discussions.

F.      Occasionally the students will give oral presentations on assigned topics. Some will be assigned as homework ad others will be spontaneous.

 

II.                 Major assignments.

A.     Each person will research an assigned historical person and present the findings to the class.

B.     Some weeks students will be required to speak with a classmate for a period of one hour. This is to be accomplished outside of class.

 

III.               Grading procedures

A.     The grading scale will follow school procedure as it is explained in the Handbook.

B.     A point system will be used in class. A point value will be given to each assignment, test, and project.

C.     Extra credit projects must be approved. They must be turned in a full week before the end of a marking period.

 

IV.              Tests and Evaluations

A.  Quizzes and daily work 15-35 points.

B.   Vocabulary quizzes                   30-50 points.

C.  Unit tests                                  125-200 points.

D.  Semester Final – comprehensive written exam…20% of final grade.

 

V.                 Class requirements

A.     Each student must bring a textbook, workbook, pencil, and paper to class. NO BORROWING.

B.     Each student is responsible for each day’s assignment. You are to exchange phone numbers with another student. If you miss a class you are to call and get the assignment. You will be expected to make up quizzes or tests immediately upon your return unless you were sick. In that case, you have one extra day to make up work.

C.     It is very important that you orally participate in class drills. Some oral work is graded.

D.     Students will have some form of assignment almost every day. It is important that student do his own work if anything is to be learned Plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment.

E.      Tardiness to class will result in a class detention.

F.      No student will leave the classroom for any reason other than obvious emergencies.

G.     Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero. Parents will be notified.

H.     If a student exceeds ten absences during any marking period, no credit will be earned in the class for that marking period.
