Grade 12
Course Description:
Emphasis is placed on using the French learned in
the first three years of study. Students will converse in French about
short stories and cultural information that will be covered during the
year. Students will use material that presents a survey of French
history and literature from prehistoric times to the present. Students
must be capable of working independently and responsibly.
Prerequisite: “B” average in French III.
I.
The following outlines the course objectives for the year.
A.
Class will be conducted in French as often as possible. Students
are expected to try to use French most of the time also.
B.
Students will frequently be writing themes in French. And given
oral presentations in French.
C.
Students will cover the following material:
1.
Review passé compose, imperfect, future, conditional, and
subjunctive.
2.
Learn the passé simple.
3.
Learn to use the “perfects”: present, future, conditional, as
they are used in “if” clauses.
4.
Possessive pronouns.
5.
Short Stories: Le petit prince, Vol de la Joconde,
and selected stories from other readers.
D.
Students will study French literature from the medieval period to
realism. Each student will present a detailed report about an assigned
period. Excerpts from various authors will be read.
E.
Students must take an active part in class discussions.
F.
Students will be expected to work independently, quietly, and
efficiently on assigned days. Absence will not be an excuse for late
work unless the student is ill.
II.
Grading procedures
A.
The grading scale will follow school procedure as it is explained
in the Handbook.
B.
A point system will be used in class. A point value will be given
to each assignment, test, and project.
C.
Extra credit projects must be approved. They must be turned in a
full week before the end of a marking period.
III.
Tests and Evaluations
A.
Quizzes and daily work 15-35 points.
B.
Vocabulary quizzes 30-50 points.
C.
Unit tests 125-200 points.
D.
Semester Final – comprehensive written exam…20% of final grade.
IV.
Class requirements
A.
Each student must bring a textbook, workbook, pencil, and paper
to class. NO BORROWING.
B.
Each student is responsible for each day’s assignment. You are to
exchange phone numbers with another student. If you miss a class you are
to call and get the assignment. You will be expected to make up quizzes
or tests immediately upon your return unless you were sick. In
that case, you have one extra day to make up work.
C.
It is very important that you orally participate in class drills.
Some oral work is graded.
D.
Students will have some form of assignment almost every day. It
is important that student do his own work if anything is to be learned
Plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment.
E.
Tardiness to class will result in a class detention.
F.
No student will leave the classroom for any reason other than
obvious emergencies.
G.
Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero. Parents
will be notified.
H.
If a student exceeds ten absences during any marking period, no
credit will be earned in the class for that marking period.
V.
Textbooks.
A.
Le petit prince – paperback novel and workbook.
B.
Workbook in French – Troisieme livre…(will be provided.)
C.
Class readers – Arsene Lupin, Contes Sympathiques,
Vol de la Joconde.
D.
Every student must own an approved French dictionary for use at
home. Students who wish to do so may purchase an Amsco French Dictionary
from Mrs. Brown. |
