Course Description:
Students will develop a basic foundation in Spanish
grammar and basic vocabulary. The whole approach aims to help students
comprehend beginning Spanish without constant dependence on
English thought patterns or English vocabulary.
Culture is brought into the classroom in various ways, ranging from
slides, movies, songs, food research, etc.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of eighth grade
language arts teacher or counselor.
I.
The following outlines the general course objectives for the
year:
A.
Students will work to learn the Spanish sound system and to learn
familiar Spanish phrases, alphabet, simple dialogue, etc.
B.
Students will be able to conjugate a regular “AR”, “ER”, “IR”
present tense verb.
C.
Students will accurately recall a body of basic vocabulary to
include weather, time, family, foods, colors, etc.
D.
Students will learn to conjugate the following irregular verbs in
the present tense: estar, ser, ir, “ie” stem changing verbs, “ue” stem
changing verbs, salir, traer, oir, conocer.
E.
Students will learn the simple future tense of ir + a +
infinitive.
F.
Students will learn the simple past tense of Acabar + de +
infinitive.
G.
Students will learn the preterit tense of regular verbs.
H.
Students will be introduced to demonstrate pronouns, direct and
indirect object pronouns, articles, possessives, prepositions, etc
I.
Students will be able to hold very basic conversations describing
themselves/others.
II.
Major assignments
A.
Memorize and recite the Lord’s Payer in Spanish.
B.
Prepare food to be served in class from an original recipe f a
Spanish-speaking country.
C.
Learn Cultural information in the textbook.
D.
Memorize a map of Mexico, Central and South American countries,
and their capitals.
I.
Grading procedures
A.
The grading scale will follow school procedure as it is explained
in the Handbook.
B.
A point system will be used in class. A point value will be given
to each assignment, test, and project.
C.
Extra credit projects must be approved. They must be turned in a
full week before the end of a marking period.
II.
Tests and Evaluations
A.
Quizzes and daily work 15-35 points.
B.
Vocabulary quizzes 30-50 points.
C.
Unit tests 125-200 points.
D.
Semester Final – comprehensive written exam…20% of final grade.
III.
Class requirements
A.
Each student must bring a textbook, workbook, pencil, and paper
to class. NO BORROWING.
B.
Each student is responsible for each day’s assignment. You are to
exchange phone numbers with another student. If you miss a class you are
to call and get the assignment. You will be expected to make up quizzes
or tests immediately upon your return unless you were sick. In
that case, you have one extra day to make up work.
C.
It is very important that you orally participate in class drills.
Some oral work is graded.
D.
Students will have some form of assignment almost every day. It
is important that student do his own work if anything is to be learned
Plagiarism will result in a zero on the assignment.
E.
Tardiness to class will result in a class detention.
F.
No student will leave the classroom for any reason other than
obvious emergencies.
G.
Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero. Parents
will be notified.
H.
If a student exceeds ten absences during any marking period, no
credit will be earned in the class for that marking period.
