Spanish II

Grades 10, 11, 12

Course Description:

Students will expand on their basic foundation in Spanish grammar and conversation.  The main objective is to increase students’ comprehension of written and spoken Spanish.  They will concentrate on improving the speed and accuracy of their Spanish pronunciation.  Culture study will continue to be an important part of the class.

 

Prerequisite:  Spanish I (recommended C in Spanish I)

 

I.                    The following outlines the general course objectives for the year.

A.     Students will continue to work on the Spanish sound system with emphasis on phonetic sounds, accent, and speaking.

B.     Students will increase their active vocabulary and continue to grow in passive, reading vocabulary.

C.     Students will learn the conjugation of regular and irregular verbs in the preterite.

D.     Students will learn how to conjugate in the imperfect and future tenses.

 

II.                 Grading Procedures

A.     The grading scale will follow the school procedure as it is explained in the Handbook.

B.     A point system will be used in class. A point will be given to each assignment, quiz, test, or project.

C.     If a student has a failing grade, he/she must see the teacher to work out a plan to raise the grade. All assignments must be completed in the grade book...and the students will be required to retake certain tests and quizzes. The student must also work with a tutor or study partner on a regular basis.

III.               Tests and Evaluations

A.  Quizzes and daily work 15-35 points.

B.   Vocabulary quizzes                   30-50 points.

C.  Unit tests                                  125-200 points.

D.  Semester Final – comprehensive written exam…20% of final grade.

 

IV.              Class requirements

A.     Each student must bring a textbook, workbook, pencil, and paper to class!

B.     Each student is responsible for each day’s assignment. You are to exchange phone numbers with another student so you can call to get the assignments if you miss class for a dental appointment, soup kitchen, game, etc. YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO MAKE UP TESTS/QUIZZES IMMEDIATELY UPON YOUR RETURN TO CLASS UNLESS YOU WERE SICK. In case of illness you have one day for each day of illness to make up the work.

C.     It is very important that you orally participate in drills. Some oral work is graded.

D.     Students will have some form of assignment almost every day. It is important that the student do his/her own work if anything is to be learned. However, study partners are highly encouraged as long as neither student simply copies the work. DAILY WORK IS WORTH FIVE POINTS.

E.      Classroom behavior that interferes with the learning of others will not be tolerated.

 

V.                 Textbooks

The students will complete The Glencoe Bienvenidos textbook and the first four units of A Bordo, the second year book.

The students will be expected to purchase their own copies of workbooks for the two textbooks used in class.
