1.0 Credit
Grade 9, 10
Course Description
The
topics in Algebra 1 include, solving and graphing linear equations and
inequalities, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations and
graphs. rational exponents and logarithms. Students use inductive
reasoning to investigate patterns and create mathematical models for
real-world situations.
Prerequisite: Eighth grade math, Algebra Essentials
Required Text: Algebra 1, MgDougal Littell
Topics to be covered as time permits:
- Properties of real numbers
- Solving linear equations
- Graphing linear equations and functions
- Solving and graphing linear inequalities
- Systems of linear equations and inequalities
- Exponents and exponential functions
- Quadratic equations and functions
- Polynomials and factoring
- Rational equations and functions
- Radicals and connections to geometry
- Rational exponents and logarithms
Materials Needed for Class:
- Textbook
- Three ring binder (1 1/2" or 2") with dividers
- Pencil and eraser
- Calculator (Texas Instruments TI30, 34, or 36)
- Loose leaf notebook paper and graph paper
- Ruler
Course Expectations:
- Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the bell
rings. Have homework and note paper out and ready. Students are
expected to contribute positively to the learning environment in the
classroom. Ask questions and seek out help when confused.
- There will be a math assignment every day. I will not collect
homework but it will be checked at the beginning of class the day it
is due. I will be checking whether or not all the problems are
completed and all work is shown and for neatness. Using a pencil
will be to your advantage. A problem will be on the board for you to
be working on while I am checking the homework. Late homework is not
accepted.
- Every student is expected to take class notes every day. They
should be clearly labeled with the section we are covering. They
should include sample problems work out.
- Each student will use a three ring binder with the following
sections:
a. Class notes
b. Homework
c. Returned quizzes and tests
d. Handouts
e. Vocabulary and definitions
The three ring binder will be turned in at each test and graded for
completeness and neatness.
- There will be a quiz or test each week. Quizzes may be announced
or unannounced. If a quiz or test is missed because of an absence,
it must be made up before or after schools as soon as the student
returns or when scheduled by the student and teacher. You must speak
to me about a missed test or quiz the day you return or you may
received a zero. If a student does poorly on a test, I will allow a
retake if the student shows evidence of getting tutored and it must
be done before the next test.
- Extra Credit: I will post a Problem of the Week each week for
extra credit. I will also have some extra credit problems on each
test.
- A first and second semester cumulative exam will be given.
- A quarterly progress report will be given to all students to be
signed by parents and returned. You can also check your grade on the
website.
- It is the students' responsibility to find out what they missed
when they were absent and make up the work. You have one day to make
up work for each day missed. If it is a pre-arranged absence, you
are responsible to get the assignments before the absence and turn
them in the day you return.
