Honors Geometry

Grades 9, 10, 11

Course Description

This course has a strong geometry/logical reasoning strand that includes such topics as inductive and deductive reasoning, coordinate geometry in two and three-dimensions, implications, arguments, and postulates in algebra.  Students write two-column, paragraph, and flow proofs about similar and congruent triangles.  New algebra topics include indirect variation, complex numbers, the binomial theorem, and rational and cubic equations.  Matrices are introduced and used to represent transformations and systems of equations.  Other topics include special right triangles, counting techniques, probability and odds, Pascal's triangle, and binomial experiments.

Prerequisite: "B" average in Honors Algebra or an "A" average in Algebra I and teacher recommendation

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:

  1. Come prepared for class: (have sharpened pencil, notebook, paper, textbook and any other appropriate equipment/supplies. (See supply list below)

 

 

 

       2. Be in their seat when the bell rings, be prepared to learn, be courteous and quiet.

 

  1. Keep ALL materials organized in a 3-ring binder or divided expandable folder.

Including:

                        Daily Class work                                     

                        Homework / Handouts                                 

                        Quizzes & Tests

    Vocabulary / Definitions

    Postulates & Theorems

 

  1. Keep all assignments / due dates and grades in Planner.

  1. Use class time appropriately:

§         By listening to and following instructions (NO sleeping in class)

§         By working on math assignments only

§         By asking questions in class

§         By getting extra help when confused. Make an appointment with me in the appointment book. (I am available before school - after 7:30 a.m., after school or during advisement)

      6.   ASSIGNMENTS. Turn in neat papers that are legible. It is required to put name, date, assignment and hour in upper right corner of paper or assignment for it to be graded. If absent, please also include the word ABSENT and the date absent at the top of the paper and circle. SHOW ALL WORK & BOX ALL ANSWERS on ALL ANSWERS on ALL homework, tests, and quizzes

Assignments are to be turned in on time (due dates). If not, they may lose points each day they are late.

7. MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS. You are responsible for making up missed homework and     assignments. Make arrangements to take tests and quizzes as soon as possible. Tests or Quizzes previously announced will be expected to be taken the day you return to class. If the absence is prearranged, you are responsible to get the assignments before the absence and turn them in the day you return.

 8. Do their best, show self control, patience, and create a positive atmosphere for learning.

 9. Show respect towards self, other students, teachers and all personal and school property. Also show integrity, kindness, and courtesy towards all.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS

1.      Homework (Show All Work)

§        Have homework out sitting on your desk at the beginning of class for a pre-check.

§        DO NOT expect me to wait for you to get it out when I come around to check.

§        OR Have homework ready to be corrected at beginning of class.

§        OR Have homework ready to turn in

2.      Restroom Policy

§        Use the restroom before class

§        Please do not interrupt class except in case of an emergency

3.      FAILED Test or Quizzes

I recommend that you make arrangements to:

                 a. Correct (1/2 of corrected points to be added to original score)

     b. Retake the Test or Quiz

Check with me to see which option will be available (the options may only be available after school), then RESTUDY and ask questions. These options will NOT be available for every test or quiz, so Do Your Best on each the first time.

4.      Room Appearance

Do your part in keeping the room clean - put desk back in order, pick up and put in trash all items on the floor, do not write on desk. NO food or drink allowed in room. This is your room, Please keep it clean.

5.      New Textbook

It is your responsibility to preserve, protect and properly care for the textbook assigned to you. This textbook is NEW, so take VERY GOOD care of it. Protect the textbook by covering it, DO NOT drop the textbook, stuff it in your locker or book bag.

DO NOT make any marks in it. Fines will be assessed at the end of the year for any damage to the textbook.

GRADING POLICIES

Homework, tests, projects and quizzes (announced and unannounced – several per chapter) and any other assignments given for grading will be scored and recorded in the following manner:

60% Weighted

§         All chapter tests

§         Major quizzes

§         Large projects

 

30% Weighted

§         Minor quizzes

§         Article Reviews

§         In-Class Work / Group Work

§         Some Homework Assignments / Other Assignments

§         Project

 

10% Weighted

§         Homework or Daily Assignments / Assignment Checks (Collected and/or graded randomly)

§         Classroom Participation

§         Some In-Class Work / Group Work

§         Notebook Checks

§         Required Signature Papers

§         Kleenex

§         Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments may be occasionally offered during the course of the class on tests, quizzes, homework assignments, or etc.  All students are encouraged to try them.  I will not create extra credit assignments to help students bring up grades at the last minute such as the end of the marking period of semester.

PLEASE ASK FOR HELP.  Make an appointment to get extra help.  I am here to make your math experience a successful one.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

1.            3-ring binder with 6 dividers to keep assignments, notes, etc. organized OR an expandable divider folder just for Geometry.

2.            Pencils, eraser, colored pencils, including red pencils,

3.            Graphing paper, notebook paper. NO spiral notebooks

4.            Calculator (graphing optional).  Please engrave with your name & register with me.

5.            Protractor, compass, and ruler (with inches, centimeter and millimeter units on it)

6.            Kleenex (extra credit points – one (1) box per semester)
