Honors Algebra II

 Mrs. Colucci

Mr. LeRoux

1.0 credit

Grades 11,12

Course Description

Mrs. Ruth Fabbro

An emphasis is placed on Functions in Algebra 2. The types of functions discussed include linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, and trigonometric. Students also study matrices, conic sections, sequences and series, and probability and statistics. Since this is an honors class, more of the discovery method will be used with the students.

Prerequisite: Geometry

Topics to be covered as time permits:
1. Linear equations, inequalities, and functions
2. Systems of linear equations and inequalities
3. Matrices and determinants
4. Quadratic functions
5. Polynomials and polynomial functions
6. Rational exponents and radical equations
7. Exponential and logarithmic functions
8. Rational equations and functions
9. Conic sections
10. Sequences and series
11. Probability and statistics
12. Trigonometric functions
13. Trigonometric graphs, identities, and equations

Materials needed for class:
1. Textbook
2. Three ring binder (1" 1/2" or 2") with dividers
3. Graphing calculator
4. Loose leaf notebook paper and graph paper

Course Expectations:

1.Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the bell rings. Have homework and notepaper out and ready. Students are expected to contribute positively to the learning environment in classroom. Ask questions and seek out help when confused.

2. There will be a math assignment everyday. I will not collect homework but it will be checked at the beginning of class the day it was due. I will be checking whether or not all the problems are completed and all work is shown and for neatness. Using a pencil will be to your advantage. A problem will be on the board for you to work on while I am checking homework. Late home work is not accepted.

3. Every student is expected to take class noted every day. They should be clearly labeled with the section  we are covering. They should include sample problems worked out.

4. Every student will use a three ring binder with the following sections:
              a. Class notes
              b. Homework
              c. Returned Quizzes and Test
              d. Handouts
              e. Vocabulary and definitions
The three ring binder will be turned in at each test and graded for completeness and neatness.

5. There will be a quiz or test each week. Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. If a quiz or test is missed because of an absence, it must be made up before or after school as soon as the student returns or when scheduled by the student and teacher. You must speak to me about a missed test or quiz the day you return or you may receive a zero. I f a student does poorly on a test, I will allow a retake if the student shows evidence of getting tutored and it must be done before the next test.

6. Extra Credit: I will post a Problem of the Week each week for extra credit. I will also have some extra credit problems on each test.

7. A first and second semester cumulative exam will be given.

8. A quarterly progress report will be given to all students to be signed by parents and returned. You can also check your grade on the website.

9. It is students' responsibility to find out what they missed when absent and make up the work. You have one day to make up work for each day missed. If it is pre-arranged absence, you are responsible to get the assignments before the absence and turn then in the day you return.

Course grade determination:

Point Value Aprox. Percentage of Grade
Homework 3 20%
Quizzes 10-15 20%
Tests 100 50%
Notebook 20 10%

Honors Algebra II

Course Syllabus for '07-'8 School Year

Instructor: Mr. Tom LeRoux
Book: McDougal Littell by Larson, Boswell, & Kanold
Supplies: Graphing Calculator, graph paper

Expectations
Be prepared to work when class begins. Contribute positively to the learning environment in the classroom. Originate mathematics to everyday life.

Course Specifics
There will be a math assignment everyday. I will collect every math assignment you complete. Any missing assignments will result in a zero. There will be a quiz or a test once a week.

Make Up Work:
Students are responsible for making up all missed work. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out the assignment you missed and turn then in on the new due date. (You have one day for each day missed) If the absence is pre-arranged, the student is responsible to get the assignments before the absence and turn them in the day they return.

Grading:
Homework: between 5-20 points per assignment
Quizzes: between 10-20 point per assignment
Tests: 100 points per test
Take the total number of points earned by the student and divide by the total number of points accumulated to receive percentage.

Grading Scale:
As per the student handbook
It is you responsibility to do the homework. If you cannot, seek help- from me, an upperclassman, a friend, or ask in class. The "Great Goddess of Mathematics" helps those who seek help- so ask for help and I will see what she can do for you. You learn mathematics by doing, not by watching. JUST DO IT!

Scripture by numbers: Every new school day a student will present to the class a scripture passage that deals with numbers, digits, or ciphers. The Old Testament equals odd calendar days and the New Testament equals even calendar days.

"Where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them."
