Course Description:
This class provides an introduction to philosophy.
Various philosophical questions will be addressed with insights on how
different philosophies in history have tried to respond to these
questions. A special emphasis will be placed on the teachings of the
Catholic Church, in order to compare and contrast each philosophical
viewpoint with these teachings.
Outcomes:
- Be able to understand and explain in an
interactive setting the different philosophical viewpoints.
- Be able to demonstrate knowledge of
philosophical questions throughout development of a hands-on,
individual project.
- Be able to critically read philosophical
excerpts and evaluate their credibility.
- Be able to write an analysis of teachings of the
Catholic Church and compare and contrast different philosophical
perspectives with Church teaching.
- Be able to conduct research on philosophical
questions.
- Be able to identify and evaluate one’s personal
philosophy in an oral presentation.
- Be able to use terminology of philosophy in an
appropriate context.
Required Texts:
Guide to Philosophy, Alpha Publisher, 2002.
A classroom set of texts will be provided. There is no requirement for
individual purchases.
Philosophy Course Requirements:
- All papers will be typed.
- All written work must be completed in ink.
- All written work must be completed on loose-leaf
paper on one side.
- All work must be handed in on time.
- Students must bring a notebook and necessary
materials to class each day.
- It is the student’s responsibility to see the
teacher sometime during the day of a return from an absence in order
to make up missing assignments due to excused absences. Quizzes and
tests must be made up.
Grading:
Various methods of assessment will be used.
Students will be graded on a point system with varying weights according
to the importance of the assignment. The quarterly work and semester
exam will constitute at a certain percentage of the grade determined by
the student hand book. |
