Mr. Bradtke
Syllabus
1.0 credit
Grades 10, 11, 12
Course Description
A
course for the college-bound student who needs a sound science
background. The structure and properties of matter are studied
along with chemical bonding, stoichometry, gases, liquids and
solids, acids and bases, and chemical thermodynamics. There is a
great deal of math involved in this course. Lab activities will be
performed in correlation with material covered. Any students
seriously considering entering engineering or medical/health related
schools in college are highly recommended to take chemistry and
physics.
Prerequisites include: One year Biology,
Algebra I/Integrated I. Must have or be taking Integrated II.
Textbook:
Basic Chemistry, Seese, 7th edition, Prentice
Hall
Goals:
To Introduce students to problem solving in science with the
goal of making them proficient at manipulating both ideas and
numbers
To provide students with a basic understanding of how matter
is organized in the world around them
To train students in basic laboratory safety measures when
handling dangerous or corrosive chemicals as well as when carrying
out of lab
To make students aware of problems concerning pollution and
chemical safety and allow them to make their own, informed and
responsible decisions on these issues.
Class Expectations:
Students should be:
- Respectful to me, to other students, and to property
- In class on time. On the third tardy and each one there after,
they will receive a detention (usually cleaning labs)
- In dress code everyday
- On task. Do not use time in class to work on homework, from
other classes.
- Be prepared. Always have the following: homework, pencil, pen,
textbook, note book, and calculator. These must be brought each
day! Students will not be allowed to go back to their lockers to
get them.
Excused Absences:
Students will have one week from the time they return to make up
tests, quizzes, and labs. After this time, the missing grade becomes
a zero. Homework missed will be due after a period of time equal to
the number of days of their absence. All missed work must be made up
outside of regular class time.
Unexcused Absences:
First absence – detention
Second absence and so on – 2% loss of grade
(Student must pay for any lab equipment that is broken.)
Homework:
Homework problems will be assigned almost daily. To be successful
students must keep up with the homework problems.
Grading:
Grading is approximately:
50% homework, participation and labs
50% test and quizzes
It is imperative that students form the habit of looking at their
lecture notes each evening! This is one of the easiest and most
effective ways of learning and remembering new material.
The final exam is cumulative |

Goals
Upon completion of Chemistry students will be able to:
· Use the scientific
method when problem solving
· Understand the
organization of matter in the world around us
· Know basic safety
procedures in the laboratory
· Be aware of issues
involving chemistry in the environment
Course Materials
Textbook: Basic Chemistry, 7th Edition, Seese,
Prentice Hall
Calculator
Grading
A Total Point system will be used and then applied to the Nouvel
grading scale (See Student Handbook).
Classroom Expectations
Students will always :
Come prepared with paper, writing utensil, calculator, and any
assignments (a trip to the locker for these things will not be
permitted!)
Respect themselves, others, and school property
Be in uniform
Be on time, in their seats, and ready to begin class when the
bell rings
Keep up with Homework, it is essential to the learning process
in this class
Know that you can succeed if you put your mind to
it!
Make Up Work
Students are responsible for all make up work. If absent, it is
the students responsibility to find out the missed assignment and
turn it in on the new due date (You are allowed one day for each day
missed). If the absence is pre-arranged, you are responsible to get
the assignments before the absence and turn them in the day you
return.
