Course
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of Anatomy and Physiology,
students will:
1. Understand the relationship
between cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.
2. Be able to identify the general
structure and function of organs in the major organ systems.
3. Understand the relationship between the organ systems.
4. Become familiar with common anatomical terminology.
5. Experience the practical application of anatomy and physiology
in a clinical setting.
6. Become familiar with dissection techniques.
7. Understand how the human body adapts to maintain homeostasis.
8. Be familiar with current biological
technology and the ethical concerns surrounding it.
Behavioral expectations.
1. Everything that is expected of you can be
summed up in three simple statements:
2. Be respectful of yourself and others.
3. Be respectful of any and all materials found in the classroom
and in the possession of yourself or others.
4. Do as the teacher requests to the best of your ability.
Failure to abide by these simple guidelines will result in verbal
reprimand, detention, or removal from class, depending on the
severity and/or repetitive nature of the offense.
Lab behavior.
Specific concerns, such as safety issues, will be addressed
in more detail before we spend any time in lab. However, any
misuse of laboratory equipment will result in removal from class,
a zero for that lab, and, depending on the severity of the
offense, future restrictions on lab participation. You will be
required to sign a lab safety agreement before participating in
any labs.
Absences and
tardies.
Please see the student handbook for
Nouvel’s policies regarding absences
and tardies. In addition to the
school’s standards, the following will be enforced in this
classroom:
1. Three tardies in a quarter will
result in a detention. Any further problems with
tardies will be directed to Mr.
Szym.
2. It is your responsibility to ask for any assignments missed
because of an absence.
3. If you know ahead of time that you will miss class, even
for school-sponsored events, it is your responsibility to get
assignments before the absence.
4. If you are absent the day before a quiz or a test, you will be
expected to take the quiz or test on its scheduled day.
5. Any assignments, quizzes, or tests that you miss because of an
unexcused absence will go into the gradebook
as a zero.
Passport
In general, students will not be allowed to leave the room
except in the case of an emergency. When students do receive
permission to leave, they must have the Passport section of
their planner filled out and signed. If a student does not have
their planner, they do not leave the room.
Grading.
Grades are figured on a points system. You will be graded
on how well you have built the structures on your models as well
as on daily homework, tests, and quizzes. Test and quiz scores
will be doubled to balance the large number of points available
from building the Manikens. Late work
is unacceptable.
Extra
credit.
Extra credit is accepted, up to 15-20 pts.
per quarter (to be determined by the
total number of points possible for the quarter). Extra credit is
given for reading current newspaper articles about any science or
science technology and turning in both the article and a short,
written summary of the article. Magazine and periodical articles
will not be accepted. Special extra credit may become available
throughout the year.
Word Ending Quizzes
Quizzes will be given the first Friday of
every month with the exception of January, April, and June.
Quizzes 2-6 will cover all of that section plus selected word
endings from the previous sections. The information you need will
be posted in the Science Department section of the Nouvel
website. You are responsible for accessing the site to get the
information—it will not be given to you in class.
Special
notes.
1. You are required to purchase a set of colored pencils,
with at least 12 different colors.
2. Vandalism is a suspendable
offense. Anyone caught writing on the desks will be reported to
Mr. Szym for vandalism.
3. There is no reason for students to be back in the lab areas
except during scheduled labs.
4. You may be requested at different times to provide other
materials for your assignments, such as poster board, magazines,
video tapes, etc. The cost for such items will be kept to a
minimum. If this is a problem at any time, see me.
5. You set the tone for this class. It is up to you to make this
class great.
Maniken
Responsibilities
You will be working with a partner on the
Manikens. Both of you are responsible
for the care of your model. If anything breaks, you will pay to
have it either fixed or replaced. You must make sure that your
Maniken returns home at the end of
each class and that your home stays neat and picked up.
Over the course of the year, it is likely
that you will want to take you Maniken
home either to study or to finish building structures you did not
finish in the allotted class time. You are responsible for
checking the model out with me before you take, checking it back
in the next morning, and paying for any damage that may have
occurred.
At the end of the year, the models must be
taken apart and cleaned to prepare for the next year. You and
your partner are responsible for your model. Any work I have to
do to finish cleaning the model will result in a service charge
which you will be required to pay.
This model is your baby. Take care of it
and have fun!
