Course Description
Honors Biology is an active participation class, including
individual and class projects, covering all the major aspects of
basic biology, botany, zoology, and environmental issues. Students
who wish to take this class must be able to read and write well.
Prerequisite: "A" in 8th grade science or teacher
recommendation.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of Honors
Biology, students will:
1. Be able to apply the scientific method to solve problems
Understand the organization of
cells.
Understand how cellular processes
contribute to the life of an organism.
Recognize the structure and
function of DNA, as well as its role in cell function.
Understand the mechanisms of
inheritance.
Understand how living organisms,
including humans, interact with each other and the environment.
Be familiar was current biological
technology and the ethical concerns surrounding it.
Course Materials
Book: Modern Biology
Because students will not be using a book on a daily basis,
they will not be given one to keep in their lockers or at home.
There is a classroom set of books that are available to check out
at any time.
Notebook
Colored pencils
A set of twelve colored pencils will allow the students to finish
their work, but a box of 24 different colors would be more useful.
Occasionally students will be doing projects that require them
to bring in extra materials such as tape, glue, scissors, poster
board, video tapes, etc.
Grades
Grades for all homework, tests/quizzes, and projects are assigned
appropriate point values and overall grades are determined using the
following formula:
points earned/points possible x 100 = percent grade
Letter grades are given based on the scale published in the student
handbook. |

Course description
1.0 Credit Grades 9, 10
Honors Biology is an active participation class, including
individual and class projects, covering all the major aspects of
basic biology, botany, zoology, and environmental issues. High
self-motivation, interest, and enthusiasm are a must. Students who
wish to take this class must meet the following requirements: an
ability to comprehend reading materials and good writing skills.
Prerequisite: "A" in 8th grade science or teacher
recommendation.
Goals
Upon completion of Honors Biology students will be able to:

Use the scientific method when
problem solving

Understand the organization of
a cell
·
Understand how cellular
functions are linked to the survival of an organism
·
Understand DNA structure,
function, and importance within the cell
·
Understand human genetics and
how traits are expressed
·
Understand the basics of
ecology with special interest in human actions and effects
·
Be aware of current biological
issues in the media
Course Materials
Textbook: Modern Biology,
Holt, Rinehart, and Winston
Because students will not be using
the textbook on a daily basis one will not be issued. A classroom
set is available for checkout.
Colored pencils (set of 24
preferred)
Grading
A Total Point system will be used
and then applied to the Nouvel grading scale (See Student Handbook).
Classroom Expectations
Students will always :
Come prepared with paper, writing
utensil, and any assignments (a trip to the locker for these
things will not be permitted!)
Respect themselves, others, and
school property
Be in uniform
Be on time, in their seats, and
ready to begin class when the bell rings
Know that you can
succeed if you put your mind to it!
Make Up Work
Students are responsible for all make up work. If absent, it is
the students responsibility to find out the missed assignment and
turn it in on the new due date (You are allowed one day for each day
missed). If the absence is pre-arranged, you are responsible to get
the assignments before the absence and turn them in the day you
return.
