Course Description
The
same as Chemistry except students will move at a faster pace. The
amount of material is increased and is covered in more depth than that
of the College-Preparatory Chemistry. A higher level of problem solving
is also expected. Lab activities will be performed in correlation with
material covered. Any student seriously considering entering
engineering or medical/health related schools in college are highly
recommended to take chemistry and physics as they are required by many
colleges.
Prerequisites: "A" average in Biology and "A/B" average in Integrated I
strongly recommended. Must have or be taking Integrated II.
Textbook:
Basic Chemistry, Seese, 7th edition, Prentice Hall
Goals:
To Introduce students to problem solving in science with the goal
of making them proficient at manipulating both ideas and numbers
To provide students with a basic understanding of how matter is
organized in the world around them
To train students in basic laboratory safety measures when
handling dangerous or corrosive chemicals as well as when carrying out
of lab
To make students aware of problems concerning pollution and
chemical safety and allow them to make their own, informed and
responsible decisions on these issues.
Class Expectations:
Students should be:
- Respectful to me, to other students, and to property
- In class on time. On the third tardy and each one there after,
they will receive a detention (usually cleaning labs)
- In dress code everyday
- On task. Do not use time in class to work on homework, from other
classes.
- Be prepared. Always have the following: homework, pencil, pen,
textbook, note book, and calculator. These must be brought each day!
Students will not be allowed to go back to their lockers to get them.
Excused Absences:
Students will have one week from the time they return to make up
tests, quizzes, and labs. After this time, the missing grade becomes a
zero. Homework missed will be due after a period of time equal to the
number of days of their absence. All missed work must be made up outside
of regular class time.
Unexcused Absences:
First absence – detention
Second absence and so on – 2% loss of grade
(Student must pay for any lab equipment that is broken.)
Homework:
Homework problems will be assigned almost daily. To be successful
students must keep up with the homework problems.
Grading:
Grading is approximately:
50% homework, participation and labs
50% test and quizzes
It is imperative that students form the habit of looking at their
lecture notes each evening! This is one of the easiest and most
effective ways of learning and remembering new material.
The final exam is cumulative
