This year, Nouvel is
forming a math club to better prepare our students for competitions and to
use math outside the class room. There are brief descriptions of each
event--click on the event name to view them.

Descriptions of Competitions
Michigan
Mathematics Prize Competition (Parts 1 & 2)
Generally open to
Nouvel Pre-Calculus level or higher students, or anyone who is interested.
Officially, you must be a high school student. Part I of this exam is
completely multiple choice to measure the student's general math background.
If a student shows exceptional math skills, he or she will be invited to
take Part II on December 8. Awards include scholarships ranging from $450 to
$2400. Calculators are allowed on Part I only.
American Mathematics Competitions (AMC 10 & AMC 12)
For the first year
ever, the American High School Math Exam has been divided into two
events--9th/10th grade level and 11th/12th grade level. The test consists of
25 questions worth six points each if answered correctly. Two points are
awarded for unanswered questions, and no points are given for incorrect
answers. Students who score 100 points or better on the AMC 12 or are in the
top will be invited to the next level. There are no Calculus questions on
the test.
American Invitational Mathematics Examination
For the exceptional
students who are invited, the AIME is a fifteen question exam that can be
answered with the use of pre-Calculus concepts. Each question is worth one
point and is answered with the use of an integer between 0 and 999. The test
is made so that even educated guesses are probably wrong, since there are
literally one thousand choices for each question. Calculators are not
allowed.
USA
Mathematical Olympiad
This exam is given to
only roughly 200 students within the United States. It is a six-hour,
six-question essay exam. The top 16 students go to the International
Mathematical Olympiad.
U of
M - Flint Math Field Day
This contest is for a
team of five. One student must be a freshman or sophomore and the other four
juniors or seniors. Events include Leapfrog, Chalk Talk, Mad Hatter, the
Swiss Game, Team Essays and more.
JETS
- TEAMS
Nouvel has a varsity
and junior varsity JETS team. Each team is to answer 100 multiple choice
questions in an hour and a half, and can use any resources. There is also an
essay section in which five essays are to be written in an hour and a half.
Questions may be divided among the team in any way, and guessing is
permitted.
9th/10th Grade Math Challenge
Nouvel has gone to the
Challenge in Traverse City for the last few years, but there is also an
event in Grand Rapids. The team must consist of no more than six students,
including two freshmen, two sophomores, two boys, and two girls. Events
include the Pony Express, relay race, team essay, and written quest.
SVSU
Math Olympics
All Nouvel students
are invited to attend this event, which takes place during a school day in
May. This year, the top five scores in each level (9th/10th is level I,
11th/12th is level II) will be counted and the team with the most points
wins. Individual awards are given to the best students in each level.
Pi Day
This year, Nouvel will
celebrate Pi Day, 3/14, with help from the math club. All math classes will
be taught by students, and subjects will include origami, probability
carnival, the golden ratio, and math competition games. Other possible
activities include a bake sale on March 14 only.
