Description

Science Olympiad is a statewide interscholastic competition process that allows schools to compete at local, regional, state, and national levels. Its goals include: improving science education; increasing student interest in science; and providing recognition for achievement in science by students and teachers, using the team concept for collaboration and problem solving. On this date, many events take place in which the students have an opportunity to win medals, and advance to higher levels. The events can deal with science anywhere from nature, astronomy, engineering, to chemistry.

Early morning on Saturday, March 19th, twenty-seven of Nouvel’s finest science students found themselves at Delta College eager to compete in the Annual "Science Olympiad" competition. Nouvel placed 8th out of 13 area high schools, an improvement over last year’s 9th place showing. Leading Nouvel with a first place finish was Amanda Tilot ’05, St. Stephen Parish, and Samantha Hammis ’05 in the category of "Practical Data Gathering". Just behind, with second place finishes were Chelsey Dambro ’06, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, and Kaitlan Hayes ’07, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, in "Astronomy", Katie Oskvarek ’05, St. Helen Parish, and Kelsey Reno ’05, St. John Vianney Parish, in "Cell Biology", and Bryan Buffa ’05, St. Stephen Parish, and Kyle Barriger ’05, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in "Chemical ID" and "Fermi Questions". Coaches Mr. Horny, Mr. Bradtke, and Mrs. Balash guided the students for weeks of practice leading up to the day of the competition. This year was a good experience and we look forward to competing next year
