The schedule follows the workshop descriptions. Organization Strategies It is extremely important to be organized if you want to succeed in school (or just about anything). There are lots of things you need to keep track of to stay organized: your money, lunch, clothes, cds, etc. However, to be successful in school the most important things are your school supplies (books, paper, notebooks, homework, etc.), your time, your grades, and your assignments. There are 7 organizational strategies presented in the workshop. They are: organizing your school supplies, organizing your study area, organizing your time, organizing your assignments, prioritizing your work, organizing your grades, and organizing your long-term research projects. Note Taking Strategies Three different formats for taking notes will be presented. Each student will choose one that is best for them. There are eight strategies that will be presented: simple outlining, mind mapping, combo notes, using abbreviations for speed, using recall questions to turn notes into study sheets, improving listening power, taking notes from lectures, and adding textbook notes to lecture notes. Reading Strategies The ability to thoroughly understand what you read is one of the most important skills for school success. Since much of the information in school is communicated either in textbooks, outside readings, notes, or written work, it is essential that you have the ability to understand what you read. There are five strategies that will be presented: taking notes while reading, reading to understand, paraphrasing, identifying signals in a reading selection, learning new vocabulary, and summarize with 3 sweeps of how to really read a textbook. Test Taking Strategies Good test grades are essential to your overall grades in class and your success in school. In this workshop you will learn about five different types of tests that teachers usually give the strategies you can use to succeed on each type. The twevle strategies covered are: reading directions, taking objective tests, taking matching tests, taking true-false tests, taking multiple choice tests, check what you know about taking tests, taking essay tests, how to begin the essay, subjective testing, making old tests work for you, and studying midterm and final exams. This workshop may run slightly over the 4:00 stop time. Memorization Strategies The most thorough reading, highlighting, note-taking, and questioning for recall will not result in good test scores unless you are able to remember the information during the test. There are eight memorization strategies that will be presented: remembering requires understanding and planning, memory techniques, memorizing by using acrostics and acronyms, memorizing by using charting and visual emphasis, memorizing by using visualization, memorizing by using association, memorizing by linking information, and memorizing by using rehearsal Study Skill Workshop Schedule
